ScanFi — Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 17, 2026
Ad-Free App1. Overview
ScanFi (“the App”) is a WiFi network analysis tool developed by Vikrant Waghmode (“we”, “our”, “us”). This policy explains what data the App collects, how it is used, and your rights as a user.
The App does not require an account, does not sync data to any cloud service, and does not sell or share your personal information with third parties.
2. Data Collected and Why
2.1 WiFi Network Information
ScanFi scans nearby WiFi networks and reads publicly broadcast information including network names (SSIDs), hardware addresses (BSSIDs), signal strength, channel, frequency, and security type. This information is broadcast by routers and access points to all nearby devices. It is displayed to you within the App and optionally saved to your device’s local storage for the Network Log feature.
2.2 Location Data
Android requires the Fine Location permission to perform WiFi scanning. The App also uses your GPS position in the WiFi Survey feature to place signal-strength markers on a map. Location data is:
- Used in real time to update the map overlay
- Saved to your device’s local database only when you explicitly tap the “Record” button in WiFi Survey
- Never transmitted to our servers
- Never used for advertising targeting or tracking
2.3 Network Speed Test Data
When you choose to run a speed test the App connects to external servers to measure your connection. These connections are made only after you confirm the data usage prompt. The servers used are:
- raw.githubusercontent.com — download speed measurement
- speed.cloudflare.com — upload speed measurement
- Your router’s local gateway — ping / latency measurement
Speed test results (download, upload, ping) are saved locally on your device so you can review your history. No results are sent to our servers.
2.4 Map Tiles
The WiFi Survey map downloads tile images from third-party map providers. These services may log your IP address as part of standard server operation.
- OpenStreetMap / MAPNIK (light theme) — see the OpenStreetMap Privacy Policy
- CartoDB Dark Matter (dark theme) — see the Carto Privacy Policy
3. Data Storage
All App-generated data (Network Log, speed test history, WiFi Survey markers) is stored locally on your device. We have no access to this data. You can delete all stored data at any time from within the App:
| Data | How to delete |
|---|---|
| WiFi Survey markers | Tap the delete button inside the WiFi Survey screen |
| Speed test history | Tap “Clear” in the history card on the Speed Test screen |
| Network Log | Tap “Clear All” in the Network Log screen |
Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data permanently.
4. Permissions Explained
| Permission | Reason |
|---|---|
ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION |
Required by Android to scan nearby WiFi networks and to position you on the WiFi Survey map |
ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION |
Fallback location used for WiFi scanning |
ACCESS_WIFI_STATE |
Read current WiFi connection details and scan results |
CHANGE_WIFI_STATE |
Trigger WiFi scans |
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE |
Detect whether you are on WiFi or mobile data before a speed test |
INTERNET |
Download map tiles and perform speed tests |
WAKE_LOCK |
Keep the CPU awake during active scans |
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data. The only outbound connections the App makes are:
- Map tile servers (OpenStreetMap, CartoDB) — to display the map
- Speed test servers (GitHub CDN, Cloudflare) — only when you run a speed test
No WiFi network data, location history, or speed test results are ever sent to our servers.
6. Advertising
No advertising SDKs, tracking pixels, or analytics libraries are included in the App.
7. Children’s Privacy
ScanFi is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and note the change in the App’s Play Store release notes. Continued use of the App after any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
